Classroom Environment
The classroom environment in the PS 102 art room facilitates creativity. I make sure of this by making sure the necessary materials are available to students. Meaning that the required tools for each project are on the tables ready for student use. This creates less need for students to leave their tables while working, allowing them more time to focus on their projects. Students know where materials are kept in the chance that they need to get up for additional materials, such as a specific drawing guide or pencil sharpener. Students also know that my closets are full of alternative materials, and they can always raise their hand and ask for them, such as a Sharpie for outlining. Because of strong classroom routines and setup, students know which materials they can freely use and which ones they need to ask for. This setup facilitates a smoothly run art class, where materials are treated properly and safely.
Room Layout and Instruction
The tables are arranged into two rows of three. The space in the middle is lined with floor spots. This space is used by the lower grades for mini-lessons. Having students sit on the floor for instruction ensures that they will not start using materials before learning how to use them and being given the objectives of the day. Once the mini lesson is over, students go to their seats, where everything they need is already on the table. Allowing them to get straight to work.
Art Room Checklist
As pictured, the tables have an "art room checklist" taped to them. The check list is:
- I write my NAME
- I stay in my SEAT
- I speak in a LOW VOICE
- I leave my area CLEAN
- I am an AMAZING ARTIST
This serves as a constant reminder to all students of the general art room expectations.
